In John 11:16 the disciple Thomas says, ““Let us also go, that we may die with him.” This comment precedes the resurrection of Lazarus, whom Jesus brought back from the gave. There is a dark irony in Thomas’ voice, but it is actually prophetic of what it really means to follow Jesus.
Our resurrection to new and eternal life in Jesus is only achieved by our first “dying” with him. This theme is woven through the New Testament – that we can have no resurrection without first dying, to sin, to selfishness, to our own life. As Paul the Apostle wrote “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
