Pastor Caroline examines again what it means to “Stay thirsty” for God.
In Matthew 5:6 Jesus commends those who hunger and thirst for righteousness – that they will be blessed and” filled up” by God. Jesus was highlighting this as the way to live when we are HIS disciples.
The Scribes and Pharisees possessed a form of righteousness that was simulated and artificial. Fake. Their own doing. Jesus speaks to this in verse 20: “For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
The righteousness that God values is a personal holiness empowered by the Spirit’s work in our hearts.
The Scribes and Pharisees saw holiness and righteousness as something they could attain by keeping the letter of the law, but Jesus is saying that He came to fulfil the law and by the Spirit, if we stay hungry and thirsty for more of God, then we will be filled up.
John 7:37- Jesus says “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.” Jesus is the one that can satisfy our thirst. This means a constant filling up to overflowing – a continued state of thirsting after righteousness.
