Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Hebrews 10:19-25 (NIV)
The Holy Spirit brought that last phrase “all the more as you see the Day approaching” to mind several weeks ago as I was on holidays and starting to think about what is ahead of us this year in Lifeway Church. As we look deeper into what this passage is talking about, and the foundations that underpin the whole Hebrews letter/book, it becomes clear that the author has a “last days” perspective. In the opening paragraph the author writes, “in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son”, and “…”he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven” (Heb. 1:2-3). He tells us that Jesus Christ “has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself” (Heb. 9:26), and again
Hebrews 10:19-25 gives great insight about our priorities as followers of Jesus in the last days. That is, on the basis of faith, hope, and love, we are to confidently draw near to God, to persevere in the hope found in the gospel, and to keep on encouraging one another and finding ways to express love through doing good and being fully committed to the family of God in the church.
