We need the Holy Spirit, not just to be the agent of our salvation, but to be the active presence, life and power of God that constantly flows through us.
Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would be “a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14) and that believing in Jesus would mean that “rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38).
Jesus also said that the disciples would be “clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49), but that they needed to be READY – they had to wait for God’s timing.
Acts 2:38-39
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
This promise is FOR YOU.
The Holy Spirit is given as a GIFT through believing in Christ. We might experience or feel a tension between waiting for a free gift and being ready to receive the gift in its full measure. I do wonder if we sometimes receive a small measure, a taste, simply because we’re not ready to let go of our own life in place of letting God have complete ownership and control.
The disciples laid down their lives for Jesus completely so that they could handle a very powerful anointing of God’s Spirit. Being baptised in Holy Spirit means boldness and power for serving God, it means supernatural presence of God in your life. There is a first time we receive the gift of the Spirit, but it is not a one-time event. There is ALWAYS room for increase of God’s anointing and power.
