Following Jesus in the way of prayer

Just as he taught the first disciples, Jesus teaches us to follow him in the way of prayer. He shows us the way of prayer in which we discover deep communion with God.

Author Richard Foster wrote, “Of all the spiritual disciplines prayer is the most central because ushers us into perpetual communion with the father. Real prayer is life-creating and life-changing.
To pray is to change. Prayer is the central avenue God uses to transform us. If we are unwilling to change, we will abandon prayer as a noticeable characteristic of our lives. The closer we come to the heartbeat of God the more we see our need and the more we desire to be conformed to Christ.”

Jesus modelled for us a life centred on prayer – time alone with the Father. He teaches us to keep it real, be persistent, stay humble. He tells us to not let guilt or shame get in the way, but instead to depend on God’s mercy and grace to lift us up and give us confidence in approaching God in prayer.

Bring to God the things that burden your heart and mind; he invites us into his presence and calls us to draw near to him and give our anxious thoughts to him.
