Intercession is one of many aspects of prayer. It simply means to be a “go-between” or to “stand in the gap” on behalf of someone else. Essentially, talking to God and petitioning him for the needs of others.
In the New Testament, Paul urges all believers to always pray for people in our lives and those who make up our own community, even to all levels of government. The prayers of God’s people is a key part of how God has chosen us to cooperate with him and participate in the coming of God’s kingdom on earth.
“I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.
1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NLT)
Intercession begins in the heart of God. It is always God who takes the initiative in opening up a way of salvation for all people. Even now, Christ intercedes for us before the Father, and the Holy Spirit intercedes for us in “wordless groans” that express the heart and mind of God (Romans 8:26-27).
